5 Unusual Uses of Ghee Apart From Cooking

Apart from cooking (and baking, as we have already discovered), Ghee has several domestic uses ranging from managing a cold to making your own perfume! Here are our top 5 picks!

  • Clear a clogged nose: Nasya, or nasal treatment prescribed by Ayurveda, is a common method used to treat upper respiratory tract problems. Medicated ghee is used to treat specific ailments; however, one can ease a clogged nose caused by a common cold by administering a drop of melted and cooled pure cow ghee in each nostril in the morning. Needless to say, it is best to consult an Ayurvedic practitioner before doing this.
  • Moisturize your skin: Because it is a saturated fat, just a little bit of ghee goes a long way in keeping your skin supple and free from dryness in the winter months. Applying a scant drop on your lips at night also keeps them free from darkening and drying.
  • Make your own perfume: Mix a drop of essential oil of your choice with a few drops of pure ghee and dab tiny amounts on the insides of your wrists and behind your ears.
  • Pamper your tresses: Massage your hair with a little warm ghee and then wash off with a mild shampoo for silkier, tangle-free hair. Some people also infuse the ghee with hibiscus petals or curry leaves and find that the resultant ghee does wonders for hair growth and managing split ends.
  • Make a multipurpose face mask: You must have had ghee with honey to relieve a sore throat or ease a cough but did you know that you could use the leftover concoction as a face mask for glowing, supple skin? Massage it as is or mix it with a little milk (for normal to dry skin) or Besan (for oily skin) and leave it on for a few minutes before washing off with warm water.
